12/31/2004 @ 20:37 PST - Apparently RPGMaker 2003 CAN be gotten for free legally, so I've restored teams that used it.

12/31/2004 @ 2:18 PST - The first judging has been submitted. Less than 24 hours until the deadline, less than 48 until the upload script stops accepting uploads!

12/26/2004 @ 0:46 PST - Added Most Addictive and Best Original Idea to the awards list.

12/16/2004 @ 17:45 PST - Someone joined using RPGMaker 2003. Bad bad bad. It's not a free engine and just THIS ONCE I forgot to mention that was a requirement. The rules have been updated to reflect this, and the team has been autodropped. If you are a member of this team you will need to email me to get your password restored if you will use another engine.

12/16/2004 @ 12:04 PST - Rules are up

12/15/2004 @ 14:25 PST - In some timezones, it is already December 16. So I declare the compo begun. Just remember the script doesn't take submissions until 12:01 am Pacific Standard Time.

12/11/2004 @ 19:16 PST - Compo info just went up. I need some judges. Email me at tomt64 AT tomt64 DAWT com to be one, but you won't be able to participate if you judge. If you know someone willing to just, also have them email me.

Forum and IRC

To discuss the compo, you can join an Esper.net IRC server and channel #compo or dicuss in This forum.

Rules

The compo starts on December 16, 2004. Start in any timezone you wish. The upload script begins taking uploads on midnight December 16, 2004. The compo ends on December 31, 2004. The upload script stops taking uploads on January 1, 2005, at 11:59 PM PST. The true deadline is midnight December 31, 2004, in your native timezone. So don't be late or you may make the judges cranky!

Only engines that can be gotten for free legally may be used. This includes custom engines you make yourself, because you're providing them for free. This does not include RPGMaker, or mods of existing games that are commercial.

There are no specific rules you need to follow when making your game, but awards will be given for the following:

Most Addictive
Best Battle System
Best Art
Best Music/sound
Best Story
Best Original Idea
Best Overall

There may be other awards as well, and these will be awarded after all the entries are in and judged.

Judging

Judges will be allowed to award a total of 100 points for each entry. They will be permitted to apply up to 50 points in each of the following categories, but the total must be 100 for all categories.

The categories are:

1) Story: How well thought out is the story?
2) How Well Everything Works: Huge bugs or minor bugs? Or are there any bugs? Was the implementation of every system thought out well?
3) Quality of original content AND/OR usage of ripped/third party material: How good is the original content, or does the 3rd party material fit into the game?
4) Fun: Is the game fun? How fun?

How many points each judge applies to each category is up to his/her own discretion.

In addition, each judge will nominate a game for each award category, and the results will be posted in an update at the end of the compo, and added to each of the judging comments for that entry.

Submitting

YOU MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR FINAL GAME:
Readme.txt, which includes controls for your game and what you ripped (if anything).
Example:

Caveats:
  • Your file size must be under 15 MB. Email me the file with matching info if it is larger.
  • Do not include DLLs for ika. I will make these available via a separate download. If your engine requires DLLs, please do not include them but email me instead and I will provide them in a single download.
  • You can upload any number of times, and any number of demos. Each one will be there for download.
  • The file that will be judged will be the last one submitted unless you specify otherwise. The last one you submit will be the bottom one under your team name.
  • Overwriting is forbidden by the script. Turns out if you don't finish the upload, it won't appear, so you can keep trying with the same file name.
  • You can upload screenshots by selecting your team name and the short description of your screenshot under Game Name.
  • The time that will be listed is the time that the upload completed. Points will not be taken off if this is past the end of the compo, because the script doesn't allow you to upload after a certain time anyway!
  • The file you upload will have your team name prepended onto the filename.
