- The game supplied a setting. The game supplied an introduction. It was scripted and animated. I fought to a town and something magical happened, I was given something new. "Plot". Friedrich was gone! Something happened! This is something which has eluded much of the games in the compo: A plot twist. Then you when you follow that up, something happens AGAIN. You know, like a plot :)

- This is where the game suffers the most. There is of course, the major bug whose patch didn't make the deadline- you can't move that block in the cave. The second bug I encountered was with the beetles. One pinned me to the wall and I was powerless to escape and eventually died. A few minor annoyances.. the battle engine seems a tad spotty with the hits sometimes, and I got caught on the shopkeeper for about two minutes because of the touch-to-talk system.
Stuck on you.

- A brilliant job on content. The coding is done great; Battle engine. Scripting. The design is fantastic: The enemies, the world, the anime/cartoon watercolours style of graphics/plot/characters. It all fits very nicely. The music by troupe is easily the best quality music in this competition.. but not the best composed or original. Actually, the zealish crono crossish tune gave me a headache after a while. The town theme was way too epic for a town. As much as the music was not completely original, the outside world by corey was inspired from Zelda (before you attack me, corey said so!;D). Of course, I can only be so critical because the game affords it. Now, take that and realise how MUCH content there is. SCORE*32
I want to point out one thing I do like: The detail put into seamless play. You enter a town, the music crossfades. You gain a level, bars adjust and fade away. You walk into character to talk to them. Everything is geared towards this ideal, and it's a good one.

- This game is fun to play! The battle engine is action based, and you can do things like F+SPACE to look cool. The enemies attacks are varied, the game requires a little thought to get by them in one piece. The plot is easy going, and the characters are funny. It's got simple puzzles in the cave. Best of all, the game is challenging, (but not because I dissapear for no reason). The best evidence I can provide is this: I bothered to level up so that I could keep going, and it didn't annoy me. Spear owns Sword.
This game is what you would expect from Your Mother, and maybe more. If you look back on previous entries, I think you'll find that this game is a lot lengthier and more varied than their entries in previous compos. Except for winter, which is apparently six hours long. They set a standard, were pressured to meet it, and had no problem delivering. I think the biggest shortcoming is simply that they were over ambitious, as everything didn't come together entirely seamlessly at crunch time. |
