  • Story/Setting: - 7/15

    • There isn't really much of a story here, not that you'd expect one from a shmup. Instead, there is a setting. He says it's springtime! That's interesting but it's not really used much in the game. The planes do fit the era the readme tells us it's in though, so overall I will give 3.5 points each for story and setting, for a total of 7.

  • Functionality: - 19/25
    • The game works very well and as I would expect it to, except for a couple of qwirks which actually gave a more pleasant experience. Somehow I managed to activate the weapons and "spirits" and keep them going without pressing buttons. One minor qwirk I'm taking off one point for is the blankness of the screen before showing the Meticulous Producations "logo," and 2 points off for exiting out of the game in an abrupt fashion for both ESC and pressing N when asked to restart. 4 points off for occasionally losing more than 1 life at a time. Pressing ALT appears to pause the game.

  • Graphic Continuity: - 21/25

    • Graphics are very nice for the most part, though I am taking 4 points off for the explosion graphics, since they were simplistic in comparison with the rest. I notice that the islands and water underneath appear to be 3D, and nice work making the aircraft turn the way it does.

  • Immersion: - 15/20
    • The game is surprisingly fun for a shmup, though it goes a bit fast. I enjoyed getting the easy high score by using the "spirits" and swinging back and forth. Bombs were fun too. In this particular area, I am basing my score on a percentage scale, 100% being the most fun. Each point in this case, for the math impared, is equivalent to about 5%. This one gets 15/20, or 75% fun factor. 5% or one point was taken because of the choice of music. Unforgiven was not really a good choice there :p

  • Rules and Misc: - 6/15
    • The rules were loosely followed. Springtime and names were mentioned only in the readme, and the "spirits" were nothing more than extra fire power. You did submit a screenshot however, and for that you will get 3 points, and 3 additional for making a small effort to follow the other rules.

The game is pretty nice and given the past entries by Meticulous Productions, I can say you're improving! Keep it up and you might one day smoke the competition.
