Welcome to my compo site. Here I run compos (duh). See the currently running compo below.
12/26/03 @ 3:33 PM PST - After the final judging is in, all will be moved to an archive, and I plan to start a new compo soon. It will likely be shorter.
12/26/03 @ 12:15 AM PST - Thus endeth the compo.
12/24/03 @ 2:56 PM PST - Just a helpful note, if using ika, please check your ika-maps in a text editor to make sure your VSP is not being loaded from an absolute path before you upload.
12/23/03 @ 9:43 PM PST - The Submission Script has been updated AGAIN. It NOW allows up to 15 MB files (before it only allowed 2 MB and I just found the solution to this).
12/23/03 @ 5:43 PM PST - The Submission Script has been updated so that no one can upload and overwrite. Luckily, dial up users can try over and over until they get it, because the file won't be there unless it's finished. Also, the script will automatically stop working at 12 AM PST on December 26, which means you have all day on December 25 to start an upload. If you miss the deadline you'll have to email me.
12/23/03 @ 12:30 PM PST - The first entry was received. We have a couple of problems here. First, Read the Caveats before you upload. Second, Include a Readme or you will lose 10 points from each judge. Lastly, don't send porn. Also made various changes to the page.
12/23/03 @ 2:25 AM PST - Removed infey from team Notalentsoft and added him to team Flying Noodles. 8>p
12/22/03 @ 8:00 PM PST - Judging script added, and Added links to Judging and Submitting in obvious places.
12/21/03 @ 8:10 PM PST - Added wild-tiger to team "Any fool can make a game in a few hours"
12/21/03 @ 2:43 PM PST - Updated Caveats for Submitting. Read them carefully before you submit.
12/20/03 @ 3:30 AM PST - Added Submission Script. You can submit any time, even if you're not done yet.
12/19/03 @ 11:27 PM PST - Added Team "Any fool can make a game in a few hours"
12/09/03 @ 1:17 PM PST - Added Arek's Theme
12/08/03 @ 1:53 PM PST - Added Team Z3
12/06/03 @ 9:57 PM PST - Added Matt to team Meticulous Productions
12/06/03 @ 8:49 PM PST - Added infey to several teams (yes this is allowed, because I want GAMES).
12/06/03 @ 11:10 AM PST - Added untoward to team Spizzysoft.
12/05/03 @ 8:30 PM PST - Updated Submitting section. Please read it if you want to know more about submissions.
12/05/03 @ 6:09 PM PST - Added a team, changed Team Garagah's name to Notalentsoft, and added Ear to team Your Mother
12/04/03 @ 12:00 AM PST - The compo has begun. Email me for the graphics or code pack
12/03/03 @ 1:45 AM PST - The compo begins in less than 24 hours. 11:59 PM PST is 1 minute before it starts. Please contact me by email (obfuscated, I have received one SPAM since this page went up in an otherwise SPAM free email account) if you have entered and will be using the code pack
12/02/03 @ 8:42 PM PST - Added Team Lazy
12/02/03 @ 5:05 PM PST - The Judging criteria have changed a bit, and I have clarified the difference between setting and theme. See below. Also added a few new teams.
For a theme, take your choice of the following:
1) No theme requirement, but if you choose this option expect to be judged more harshly than if you chose one of the other available themes. (Arek) Harsh may be too harsh a word, at least for me. 8>) (TomT64)
2) Mouses (mice, for God's sake people couldn't you have figured this out on your own?), buns (bunnies, Ok, not obvious), and hysteria (Sheng_Long_Gradilla)
3) Time travel (TomT64)
NOTE: You do not have to pick a theme OR follow the setting, but it IS part of your score. The scoring is minimal, and if you do not follow the theme or the setting your score would be reduced similar to getting an A- instead of an A+. Also, the setting is Christmas, and you do not have to center your game around Christmas. All you need is a creative reference to it.
Join an Esper.net IRC server and channel #compo to discuss the compo.
Use any engine you want. It's preferable if you can use ika, WinV2, sphere, or other WinXP runnable engines.
The setting will be Christmas based. This means your graphics must be Christmas like, or your story must be surrounding Christmas, or some other creative reference to it. And just to show I'm not biased, you can alternatively base your theme on other holidays of this season (as long as you explicitly note that's what you're doing, and where the references are). The theme is different from the Christmas setting. All that is required is that some part of it be during or about or surrounding the holiday season. Judging will still take into account what reference you make though
Games require a readme that details buttons and simple playing rules.
I want RPGs. Non-RPGs are accepted, but if you are not making an RPG you will not receive any of the provided materials (see below). Zelda style games are considered RPGs.
The Compo will begin on Midnight December 4 Pacific Standard Time. That means you will have the whole day of December 4 as your starting day.
I provide 1 of 2 things:
1) A general code library. This will only be for ika, unless someone else wants to provide one for V2. It will include a menu system, item system, and a battle system at least. The menu system will only provide a few things which I have actually managed to do, and the same goes for the battle system, which will contain attack (button mash) and item only, by default. I'll try to heavily comment the code, so you're welcome to improve upon it as you wish. The menu system will provide a means for having your own items which do standard stuff, like heal, cure ailments, etc. Most if not all of this will resemble closely Final Fantasy games. Easily understood documentation and an example will also be included (or I will easily explain it to you on a case by case basis). Also, unless I can fix it before the start date, the code will be tailored to a 320x240 resolution. I don't care what your resolution is.
2) A Graphics pack. I will pull together rips and stuff from places I can find them and make them into ika and V2 compatible graphics stuff (VSPs, ika-sprites, CHRs, PCX/PNG images, etc.). I have 4 VSPs and a few images ready to be made into CHRs. I also have a few backdrops.
Since I am providing one of the above things, you may not have the other one from me. That means no getting stuff from other teams, and believe me, I'll know. Not that you would, since you're competing, but still...
PLEASE NOTE: You do not have to pick either one, and this may improve your score if you're really good.
I will also provide a theme which surrounds the Christmas setting, but it may not be what you expect...
Music will be "get your own" or "make your own".
Judging is based on the following:
1) Time frame - Please be honest with how many days you spent working on your game
2) Story - How well thought out is the story?
3) Theme and Setting - How well does the story tie in with the season and random theme? This is not a big addition or subtraction to your score
4) How well everything works (for code you write) - I know I'm in no position to judge anyone else's code, but whatever you do must work, and work well, for high marks here.
5) Quality of original content AND/OR usage of ripped/third party material (even for what I give you) - This category encourages people to make original content that is good. If you're ripping, it encourages you not to just stick rips in, but make it fit with your game.
6) Fun - (I can't believe I am just now posting this) I don't think I have to explain this. However this is the most personal opinion category there is. If you aren't doing an RPG and have a limited story, more judging will be based on this category.
7) Bonus Points
These are little things you do to go above and beyond. Some things I'll be watching for:
a) Improvement of code if you picked code option, and what additions, if any, were made that were exceptionally well thought or or original
b) Alteration or improvement of graphics if I give you graphics, or what you added to make it extra special.
c) If you choose not to accept ANY of the optional "packs", and it's exceptionally good
d) Other little things that make it cooler than cool
Judges go here to judge
Just email me or catch me on Esper.net IRC in #compo
YOU MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR FINAL GAME:
Readme.txt, which includes controls for your game, how long you spent making it, whether you are using a pack, or what you ripped.
Example:
MyGame v1.01
Use "a" to attack, Space bar to throw a bomb, and the arrow keys to move around
This game uses the graphics pack
This game has the following rips (not including graphics pack files):
ff7.chr
hahn01.vsp
A total of 10 days were spent working on this game.
Caveats:
Your file size must be under 2 MB. Email me the file with matching info if it is larger.
Do not include DLLs for ika. I will make these available via a separate download. If your engine requires DLLs, please do not include them but email me instead and I will provide them in a single download.
You can upload any number of times, and any number of demos. Each one will be there for download.
Make sure you spell your team name right each time (case sensitive) or you will have your team name listed many times, incorrectly, with a single download under each. Don't make me have to fix this.
The file that will be judged will be the last one submitted unless you specify otherwise. The last one you submit will be the bottom one under your team name.
Overwriting is forbidden by the script. Turns out if you don't finish the upload, it won't appear, so you can keep trying with the same file name.
You can upload screenshots by putting your team name and the short description of your screenshot under Game Name.
The time that will be listed is the time that the upload completed. I have tried but can't make it be when the upload started, sorry. If you are on dialup or just submitting at midnight PST, don't worry, anything received by the end of December 25 is still within deadline limits.

Teams can be up to 4 people. It has been asked if you can have more than this. Yes you can, but remember that this may be more difficult to organize and if you have too many people the judges might take this into consideration with judging the results of such a team.
