Welcome to my compo site. Here I run compos (duh). See the currently running compo below.
8/20/2004 @ 23:14 PDT - The compo ends in a little over 24 hours, so get your entries in!
8/11/2004 @ 20:47 PDT - Updated the description for the Random Rules/Theme part of the judging. It has nothing to do with story.
8/9/2004 @ 19:12 PDT - Added Sheng_Long_Gradilla as a fourth judge earlier today. So now it's TomT64, Ragecage, Zaratustra, and Sheng_Long_Gradilla as your four judges. Good luck!
7/31/2004 @ 23:50 PDT - Rules are going to go up in a few minutes.
7/25/2004 @ 14:18 PDT - The Judging rules have been posted.
7/24/2004 @ 21:32 PDT - The compo's judges will be myself (TomT64), Ragecage, and Zaratustra.
Use any engine you want as long as all the judges can use it without much effort and without spending any money. This means if it is not free, it must be provided in some form or another. For the sake of this competition, it is preferable that said engine be freely available to anyone for download, even if it's shareware, or is bundled in with your submission. It's also preferable that you use ika, verge 3, sphere, or other WinXP runnable engines.
Games require a readme that details buttons and simple playing rules.
Here are the random rules.
The game must include:
1) More than one main (playable) character. This means you must have at least 2 characters that fall under your direct control over the course of the game. For RPG purposes, this could be a different party leader. You must not try to get around this rule by letting the player choose what character to use at the beginning of the game, and then playing the entire game with that character. The characters may join the same party in the game. If they do this, the one who is the party leader must have a different effect on certain aspects of gameplay than if the other character(s) were the leader. If you allow party order changing, how to do so must be made very clear in the readme.
2) A minigame. Guess the number/letter/whatever games not allowed. This rule will be updated as necessary to exclude lame minigames. Ask me if you think your minigame might be considered too lame for the compo. Games that tie in well with the game are a plus.
3) A school as a location. If you are doing a modern game, this should be easy. If not, academies for warriors or wizards (or whatever your game is about, perhaps tutorial centers) are accepted.
The Compo will begin on Midnight August 1, 2004, Pacific Daylight(?) Time. That means you will have the whole day of August 1 as your starting day. It ends at 11:59 PM Pacific Daylight(?) Time on August 21, 2004.
Join an Esper.net IRC server and channel #compo to discuss the compo.
Judges will be encouraged to base their score on the host's rules and fields which he or she decides are necessary for a good game to be judged on. These rules are below.
1) Story - How well thought out is the story? Is there a story? Generally this is here to encourage RPG or adventure games. However, a good story can be placed into many different types of games.
2) Random Rules/Theme - How well are the random rules and/or theme followed?
3) How well everything works - Your game has to really WORK for this category.
4) Quality of original content AND/OR usage of ripped/third party material - This category encourages people to make original content that is good. If you're ripping, it encourages you not to just stick rips in, but make it fit with your game.
5) Fun - I don't think I have to explain this. However this is the most personal opinion category there is. This might help you make up for points lost in the story category.

YOU MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR FINAL GAME:
Readme.txt, which includes controls for your game and what you ripped (if anything).
Example:
MyGame v1.01
Use "a" to attack, Space bar to throw a bomb, and the arrow keys to move around
This game has the following rips (not including graphics pack files):
ff7.chr
hahn01.vsp
Caveats:
Your file size must be under 15 MB. Email me the file with matching info if it is larger.
Do not include DLLs for ika. I will make these available via a separate download. If your engine requires DLLs, please do not include them but email me instead and I will provide them in a single download.
You can upload any number of times, and any number of demos. Each one will be there for download.
The file that will be judged will be the last one submitted unless you specify otherwise. The last one you submit will be the bottom one under your team name.
Overwriting is forbidden by the script. Turns out if you don't finish the upload, it won't appear, so you can keep trying with the same file name.
You can upload screenshots by selecting your team name and the short description of your screenshot under Game Name.
The time that will be listed is the time that the upload completed. Points will not be taken off if this is past the end of the compo, because the script doesn't allow you to upload after a certain time anyway!
The file you upload will have your team name prepended onto the filename.

All that being said, go here to submit your file.
Teams can be up to 4 people. It has been asked if you can have more than this. Yes you can, but remember that this may be more difficult to organize and if you have too many people the judges might take this into consideration with judging the results of such a team. Below is a list of teams that already joined
